The
Organization
Jahandad died in 1961. Many years later,
at a family conference in Lilla, his grandchildren decided to
form an organization that would follow his ideals. They named
it after their grandfather: the Jahandad Society for Community
Development.
During the 1990s, the organization
functioned informally, headed by his granddaughter Dr Yasmin
Raashid. It raised money and established a small placement
bureau to help women find employment.
Recognizing that many jobs require
certain skills that many women do not have, and are often not
encourage to acquire, the Jahandad Society started organizing
classes in English language and computer skills.
Gradually, the Society became involved in
other activities. It started providing daily meals to patients
at the Sir Ganga Ram Hospital. When natural disasters struck
remote areas, the Society acted. It established medical camps
for drought victims in Baluchistan. Camps were maintained for
refugees from cross-border shelling along the Line of Control
in Kashmir.
Shelter and food was provided to victims of the massive earthquake that
struck Northern Pakistan on October 8, 2005. Similarly, help
from JSCD was immediately on its way following the recent
devastating floods in Sindh and Baluchistan.
